Jury convicts man in Baltimore double murder Three years after a botched robbery led to the murder of two men in Baltimores Mount Vernon neighborhood, a jury convicted Quinton Decarlo Bass, 28, who faces two life sentences plus years for fatally shooting Lawrence Peterson, 56, and Joseph Alexander Alex Ulrich, Jr. Ulrich died from gunshot wounds that day.

Peterson died in May following multiple surgeries and rehabilitation as a result of shots to his torso. The victims were standing on the front steps of a bed and breakfast Empire House, a historic brownstone that Peterson owned next to the Belvedere Hotel on East Chase Street just before 4 a.

on Aug. After he netted nothing in the robbery, Bass left the scene but returned and red seven shots. A witness testied that Bass red the shots after hearing a wisecrack from one of the men.

A third unidentied man was also involved in the robbery but identied Bass from a photo lineup, according to the Baltimore Sun. Three weeks after the shooting, police told the Blade that Bass, a drifter from Raleigh, N. Ocers took Bass, who had a criminal record, into custody after they found him and four others drinking alcohol in East Mount Vernon Park.

Bass was carrying a handgun. The Sun reported that one of the men who was with Bass told police that the gun he was carrying was a replacement for the 9mm. Bass disposed of the gun following the shooting of Ulrich and Peterson. Although both victims were gay, police ruled out a hate crime charge as they determined that the motive for the attack was robbery. Ulrich, an actor who had worked with special needs children, had recently moved to Baltimore to start a photography career.

Peterson was a popular neighborhood activist and was dubbed the Unocial Mayor of Mount Vernon. Bass trial was postponed several times including once when Peterson died.

Visit jdpower. Appeals court upholds clause in D. hate crimes law Man convicted of threats against gay couple challenged statute.

kidnapping, manslaughter, murder, rape, robbery, theft, or unlawful entry, and several other criminal oenses. Because the oense of threats to do bodily harm is not one of the particularly enumerated crimes in this denition, appellant argues that it is not a designated act subject to enhanced punishment under the Bias-Related Crime Act, the appeals court decision says.

The government rejoins that the use of the word including before the enumeration of particular oenses shows that the list is merely illustrative, not exhaustive, and that the term designated act means any criminal act under D. law, the ruling says. The trial judge agreed with the government and so do we, says the appeals court ruling. Court of Appeals Judge Stephen.

The D. Court of Appeals on Aug. The page ruling by a three-judge panel upholds an Oct. Superior Court conviction of Adams Morgan shop owner Girma Aboye for making bias-related threats to do bodily harm to a gay male couple. Police and prosecutors charged that Aboye, 53, confronted Zack Rosen and his then anc Michael Eichler while the two were sitting at a sidewalk table at Chief Ikes Mambo Room restaurant in Adams Morgan on March 11, Court records state that Aboye owned a store on the block of Columbia Road, N.

The appeals court ruling quotes from testimony at Aboyes trial in which Rosen told how he and Eichler overheard Aboye talking about them with the other person and saying, Look at those faggots.

The ruling says that when Rosen responded by telling Aboye, You know we can hear you, Aboye replied, Shut up you faggots Im going to kill you with my dog.

Im going to have my dog kill you. The dog was described at the trial as a brindled pit bull mix. The ruling says Rosen testied at the trial that Aboyes outburst made him feel unsafe and that Eichler called on his cell phone. As he did so, appellant went into his store and returned with his dog on a leash, walking the dog past the two men and away from the area, the ruling says.

It says a D. police ocer arrived on the scene within a few minutes. Court records show the ocer arrested Aboye when he returned to the scene a short time later. The ruling says Aboye was eventually charged with the misdemeanor oense of bias-related threats to do bodily harm. Following a non-jury trial, D. Superior Court Judge Robert E. Morin found Aboye guilty as charged. Aboye waived his right to a jury trial. Under the Bias-Related Crime Act, Morin had the option of handing down a sentence one and a half times greater than the sentence designated for a.

ZACK ROSEN and his then anc Michael Eichler called police after a man threatened them in charge of a threat to do bodily harm. However, court records show that on the day following the conviction Morin sentenced Aboye to days in jail and suspended the entire days. He further sentenced Aboye to 18 months of supervised probation, with the probation to become unsupervised after 9 months if Aboye complied with the terms of the probation.

Among the terms was a requirement that he stay away from Rosen and Eichler. A short time later Aboye through his attorney appealed his conviction to the D. Court of Appeals on grounds that the bias-related designation of the charge against him was invalid because the BiasRelated Crime Act didnt specically apply to the charge of criminal threats.

During the trial and prior to the verdict, Aboyes attorney argued that the Bias Related Crime Act doesnt explicitly list threats under its denition of a hate crime. The appeals court ruling notes that during the appeal the attorney argued that the statute denes a bias-related crime as a designated act that demonstrates an accuseds prejudice based on the actual or perceived characteristic of a person, including the persons race, religion and a series of other characteristics, including sexual orientation.

The attorney, Diane Bratter, also noted, according to the appeals court ruling, that a designated act is dened in the statute to mean a criminal act, including arson, assault, burglary, injury to property.

Glickman, who wrote the ruling, states that the appeals court panel examined the D. Councils legislative history in drafting and passing the Bias-Related Crime Act and determined that the Councils legislative intent was to cover criminal threats under the statute. Thus we are obliged to conclude from the plain language of the statute and the express direction in [Section] Aboye and his attorney couldnt immediately be reached to determine if they plan to appeal the Aug.

Chris Christie has vetoed legislation aimed at streamlining the process for transgender people to change the gender marker on their birth certicates. Andrea Bowen, executive director of the New Jersey LGBT group Garden State Equality, said Christies veto on Monday of the legislation, S, is nonsensical, cruel, and if you care at all about good government processes illogical.

Christies veto means that transgender people will have to undergo unnecessary surgery just to change the M or F on their birth certicate, Bowen said. Thats not only absurd and gruesome, but its out of line with what the federal government does for U. Passports, Social Security records, and what New Jersey already does for its drivers licenses.

The bill, which was passed in the Democratic-majority legislature, sought to simplify the process allowing transgender people to change their birth certicates similar to how they change their federal IDs. Under current law, a transgender person in New Jersey must show evidence of gender reassignment surgery to make the change; the legislation would have eliminated the requirement.

For minors, the bill would have allowed a parent or guardian to submit an application for a change in gender marker on their childsbehalf.

Christie, who announced his veto in the same day he announced action on a slew of legislation, said in a message to the legislature dated Aug. Birth certicates unlock access to many of our nations and states critical and protected benets such as passports, drivers licenses, and social services, as well as other important securitydependent allowances, Christie said. Accordingly, I remain committed to the principle that eorts to signicantly alter state law concerning the issuance of vital records that have the potential to create legal uncertainties should be closely scrutinized and sparingly approved.

According to Christie, New Jersey already has an expedited administrative route to make such changes, unlike other states that require potentially prolonged court. New Jersey Gov. CHRIS CHRISTIE has again vetoed a transgender birth certicate bill.

intervention to institute a change in gender marker. Christie also calls on the legislature to alleviate the security concerns and legal uncertainties in the bill, which he says may warrant his reconsideration.

Assembly member Valerie Vainieri D-Trenton said in a statement Christies veto of the legislation ignores all the nuances and complexities of gender reassignment.

Simply put, every individual does not necessarily undergo sex reassignment surgery when transitioning genders, Christie said. Yet, Gov. Christies veto ignores all the other processes theyve undergone and makes sex reassignment their only option when it comes to changing their birth certicate to recognize their inherent self. In JanuaryChristie vetoed an identical bill, citing the same concerns as now and asking the legislature to make changes.

Arli Christian, state policy counsel for the National Center for Transgender Equality, criticized Christie for his veto, saying the governor has yet again elected to allow his states birth certicate laws to deteriorate.

His veto on this bill keeps in place outdated and burdensome requirements that make it incredibly dicult for transgender people to get birth certicates that match who they are, Christian said. Birth Certicates play an enormous role in transgender peoples ability to live their life as the person that they are. And Gov. Christie has for a second time vetoed legislation denying that for transgender New Jerseyans. Christie vetoed the legislation days after he participated in the rst Republican presidential debate and had a heated exchangewith Sen.

Both men remember being shocked how quickly. everyone got used to the idea that there were LGBT people around. Although many in the United States are now used to it, these queers still want everyone to know theyre here. Queercon started as an LGBT masala-magazin.com group at the Defcon cyber security conference more than a decade ago. Imagine a small group of friends meeting at the hotel bar. But the San Francisco-based nomasala-magazin.comot, which nished its 12th year with Defcon at Ballys Hotel and Casino on Sunday, is becoming something else.

Thank courtney pakiz nude charming topic

Queercon will always be a social club for those who work in the tech industry, but the men who lead the group have made it their mission to increase LGBT visibility. And it seems to be catching on. Defcon made, and sold out of, Pridethemed convention T-shirts for the rst time this year. And there was an interesting new challenge for about 16, conference attendees this year: hack the gay hookup app Grindr to expose its security aws.

Queercon co-founder Robert Walker said its an important challenge, because inadvertent leaks of Grindrs data could open men in the community to stalking, harassment or worse, because the app tracks users locations.

Thats both a really powerful and a really dangerous thing, he said. One of. the main reasons people dont date online is because they dont think its safe. Walker runs his own startup, a dating app called Cuddli that emphasizes traditional dinner-and-a-movie experiences and connects users with the best date spots, so he said he understands why user safety is such a big deal.

Queercon set it up so that not only did its members get to take a crack at it albeit with some boundaries in place to protect men who use the app but everyone else did too.

Theres no better way to nd a lot of security problems quickly, Walker said. Reports from the Grindr challenge will be submitted to the company when they are completed, he said. In just 12 years, Queercon has gone from being worried about threats from other conference-goers to inviting them to hack a gay app with the group. Rather than worrying about being accepted like it did in the early days, the group is starting to worry about having enough space and looking to expand into new tech spaces.

Attendance has nearly tripled at all of the groups events, with nearly 2, people at this years pool party and hundreds of people cramming into the Queercon lounge they set up in the hotel. Walker, 40, of Seattle, said that when he started Queercon with his friends, the scene was a lot dierent.

He was just starting to come out himself, and the computer community was a lot more homophobic. Chat rooms were lled with homophobic slurs, and people who had good tech jobs were still worried about being red and having their neighbors nd out, he said.

Gay was actually a pejorative, he said. Yet he has always been involved with Defcon, because hes passionate about. The worlds of LGBT visibility and technology innovation came together for a national summit at the White House on Monday. Chief Technology Ocer Megan Smith represented the Obama administration in addressing the summit.

In remarks before attendees in the Eisenhower Executive Oce Building, Smith said technology experts are needed in the highest levels of government. Something that the president is really trying to do is bring technical people and lift those extraordinary technical people who are already here up to have more of a voice in architecture and how to do things and make us much more cross-functional, Smith said.

Those who attended the summit told the Washington Blade they wanted to take part to network with other LGBT tech experts and broaden their understanding of issues. Among the attendees was Vivienne Ming, whos transgender and the vicechair of StartOut, a national LGBT entrepreneur group.

The year-old resident of Berkeley, Calif. I think what grabbed me the most was the diversity of representation, Ming said. I think that when we talk about entrepreneurship and issues like that, there is a very understandable focus even in LGBT on rich, gay, white men. And its been a knock on the movement in that space for a ling time. Ming added the faces, the body shapes, the identities expressed at the summit helped dispel the image of the LGBT movement as being centered on white, gay males.

Tiany Dockery, a year-old lesbian and project manager for a tech company in Seattle, said she came to the summit because the intersection between progressive ideas and technology is important. I think that theres ways in which you kind of lose the dreamer ct working in the private sector or just working on products to ship, Dockery said. When its not a social good ct, then I think the biggest takeaway is dreaming is important. The event marked the second time the White House hosted the LGBT tech summit.

The rst summit took place a year ago in July. Katie Tomezako, a year-old lesbian from West Hartford, Conn. Tomezako recalled taking part in a criminal justice breakout session during the event. The biggest take away? We can do this. We can make a change. It was inspiring, Tomezako said. It was a lot of diverse backgrounds and some people who had been very personally aected by the criminal justice system and people who hadnt.

That we both came together very interested and very passionate about this same issue was both compelling and motivating.

CHRIS JOHNSON. Australian Prime Minister TONY ABBOTT on Aug. Australia prepares for marriage referendum EDITORS NOTE: This article originally appeared in the Star Observer, a Sydney-based LGBT newspaper. The publication has allowed the Washington Blade to repost its coverage of the Australian same-sex marriage debate.

Australian Marriage Equality is now preparing to campaign around the possibility of a plebiscite after the Coalition voted down a conscience vote in a six-hour party room meeting earlier this week. Following the party room meeting, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said after the next federal election he could either support a free vote to be adopted for the Liberals or put the matter to a public vote in the form of either a referendum or plebiscite.

AME highlighted that if there were to a plebiscite it must be at the next election, rather than afterwards, and that the question must be set by Parliament. No plebiscite should be owned by the government, nor should the issue remain at the whim of the PM, AME stated on its Facebook page. If a plebiscite is coming, it needs to happen sooner, not later.

can not

It needs to inform the next government, whichever party that may be. Weve already started drafting the legislation for a plebiscite to be held at the next election. It will show what every other poll has in the last seven years. AME National Director Rodney Croome said any further delay was totally unacceptable, and that a public vote at the next election would ensure the issue is resolved as quickly and cheaply as possible.

Tony Abbott can gag his party room, but he cant gag the Australian people who will vote strongly in favor of marriage equality at a plebiscite, he said.

The question must not be set by the prime minister, but by the Parliament. This cant be Tony Abbotts plebiscite to further delay reform, but the Australian peoples plebiscite to deliver marriage equality.

opinion you commit

Croome added that a constitutional referendum was not needed. The High Court has resolved that no change to the constitution is required to enact marriage equality, and that the parliament has the power to legislate in this regard, he said. This Parliament has failed to achieve marriage equality, and we need to ensure the next one has a clear mandate to enact legislation. Abbotts lesbian sister and City of Sydney Liberal Councilor Christine Forster has also expressed disappointment that Liberal and National MPs had not voted in favor of a conscience vote on marriage equality.

She told the Seven Network that the issue should have been a decision that was kept in the Parliament and a conscience vote would have meant a decision that was made in the Parliament as opposed to made by parties. However, she conceded a plebiscite was the next step if thats what it takes to get this very important change. A State Department spokesperson this week said ocials from the U.

Embassy in Uganda last week attended a Pride-related event in the countrys capital. John Kirby told the Washington Blade during his daily press brieng that, embassy ocials from the public aairs and political sections were represented. He did not specically identify them, but said they attended a cocktail party in Kampala on Aug. More than people on Aug. The event coincided with the year anniversary of the Constitutional Court of Uganda ruling that struck down the countrys AntiHomosexuality Act under which those convicted of repeated same-sex sexual acts faced life in prison.

Richard Lusimbo, an organizer of the Pride events who works for Sexual Minorities Uganda, an advocacy group known by the acronym SMUG, last week during a Skype interview with the Blade from Kampala applauded the White Houses eorts to emphasize LGBT rights around the world.

Randy Berry, the special U. envoy to promote global LGBT rights, on July 14 met with Lusimbo and other advocates in Kampala. President Obama a few days later during a Nairobi press conference with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta criticized Kenyas LGBT rights record.

Lusimbo described these comments as very benecial. President Obama has been a great supporter of equality and speaking out for rights of the LGBTI community around the world, Lusimbo told the Blade. His emphasis on talking about human rights in general terms, but also speaking about equality for LGBTI persons was really key in a way to send a strong message.

Homosexuality remains criminalized in Uganda, even though the countrys controversial Anti-Homosexuality Act that President Yoweri Museveni signed in February has been struck down. The U. last summer cut aid to Uganda and imposed a travel ban against ocials in the African country who are responsible for anti-LGBT and other human rights abuses. The Center for Constitutional Rights in led a federal lawsuit against Scott Lively, an American evangelical pastor, on behalf of SMUG for allegedly exploiting anti-gay attitudes in Uganda before Parliamentarian David Bahati introduced the AntiHomosexuality Bill in Ugandan lawmakers have pledged to reintroduce the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in the countrys Parliament, but they have yet to do so.

State Department spokesperson Mark Toner on Wednesday told the Washington Blade during his daily press brieng that Kerry discussed former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahims case with Najib while in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.

Toner said that Kerry requested that Anwar receive what he described as much needed medical attention. Secretary Kerry raised the issue of human rights in all of his meetings in Malaysia, Toner told the Blade. I also can conrm that he spoke with Prime Minister Najib.

He did raise Anwars case. Malaysian authorities in accused Anwar of sodomizing an aide who worked for his opposition party.

The Malaysian High Court in acquitted the opposition leader, but prosecutors quickly re-led the charges against him. An appeals court in overturned the acquittal and sentenced Anwar to ve years in prison. The countrys highest court earlier this year upheld the opposition leaders conviction. The National Security Council and the U.

High Commissioner for Human Rights both criticized Anwars conviction. The opposition leader himself described the charges as a fabrication coming from a political conspiracy to stop my political career. Immediately after, fellow Republicans criticized the remarks, including antigay conservative blogger Erick Erickson, who disinvited Trump from a RedState gathering for GOP presidential candidates.

In an interview with Erickson, former Florida governor and GOP hopeful Jeb Bush said Trumps remarks were oensive to women and the decision to rescind the invitation was correct. I mean, do we want to win? Bush said. Do we want to insult 53 percent of all voters?

I certainly will not apologize for doing good journalism, Kelly said. Also criticizing Trump was lesbian Democratic activist and former Human Rights Campaign chief Elizabeth Birch, who assailedTrump in a Hungton Post op-ed invokinga famous line used by vice presidential candidate Lloyd Bentsen against his opponent Dan Quayle.

I know Rosie ODonnell, Birch writes. Rosie is a friend of mine. And you, Donald Trump, are no Rosie ODonnell. Birch recalled philanthropic donations ODonnell has made for children in New York City and her help for those who lost their homes in New Orleans following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Rosie is not perfect, Birch concludes. She is human and makes mistakes. But Donald Trump is not, nor will he ever be, as generous in spirit, nor will he ever have the heart and character of Rosie ODonnell. John Fluharty, whos gay and heads the Delaware Republican Party, told the Blade he doubts Trump can bring the nation together as president following his controversial remarks. What concerns me most about Mr.

Trump is his temperament and judgment, Flurharty said. Regardless of party aliation, I rmly believe that Americans want a president who walks onto the world stage and makes us proud.

want a president who brings the nation together, and who summons the better nature of every American. After hearing Mr.

Trump over the last few days I think that is impossible for him to do. Despite the objections to his remarks, recent polls demonstrate Trump remains the front-runner in pursuit of the Republican presidential nomination. The rst post-debate poll, conducted by NBC News, found Trump in the lead Sunday with 23 percent support among Republicans.

Another poll later in the week from Morning Consult found 32 percent of Republicans back Trump. Thats seven points higher than the 25 percent he enjoyed in a poll conducted by the organization in the previous week. Jim Kolbe, a gay Republican who formerly represented Arizona in the U. House, said Trump is clearly not t to become president whether he runs as a Republican, Democrat or independent and attributed his position in the polls to the excitement hes causing.

That he continues to hold the lead in the most recent polling is due to the fact that people know him better than any of the other candidates in this crowded eld and that his outlandish statements and boorish behavior appeals to people who dont like politicians in general, Kolbe said. However, as these same voters get closer to an election and having to make an actual choice, they will not stick with Trump.

They will turn to another candidate they believe possesses the qualities necessary to be president of the United States. Trump remained on the oensive all week. On Tuesday, he said Bush owes women an apology for dismissing eorts to fund womens health initiatives at the federal level. Discussingeorts to defund Planned Parenthood, Bushsaid broadly, Im not sure we need half a billion dollars for womens health issues. Trump also refuses torule out a thirdparty run and denied an ABC News report in the aftermath of the debate that hes thinking about makinga pledge to endorse the Republican nominee in thegeneral election.

Its a totally false report put out by ABC, Trump said on Fox News. Im gonna keep the door open and Im gonna seeI do want to keep that door open in case I dont get treated fairly [by the Republican National Committee]. Robert Kabel, whos gay and a D. member of the Republican National Committee, dismissed Trump, saying his name calling and lack of any serious policy positions on important issues can last only so long.

Kabel, a Bush supporter, said he expects the press after a time to begin paying attention to accomplished conservatives in the race as they address the critical.

Jeb Bush lost support in polls after the GOP debate last week. issues facing the country. One candidate cited by Kabelwas Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who received signicant applause during the debate last week for his nuanced position on same-sex marriage. What the LGBT community should take note of was the overwhelming support Gov. Kasich received from the audience when during the debate he responded to a question about gays and his attendance at the wedding of a gay friend, Kabel said.

But the debate led to an apparent decline in support for former top-tier candidates, at least according to the NBC News poll.

Ted Cruz R-Texas climbed to second place with 13 percent support in the poll, followed by former neurosurgeon Ben Carson at 11 percent. Fiorina, who didnt poll high enough to qualify for the debate last week but has enjoyed signicant media coverage, tied with Sen.

Marco Rubio R-Fla. at 8 percent. But the Morning Consult poll showed less of a shakeup among the candidates. Bush stayed about the same, moving from 12 percent to 11 percent, while Walker moved from 8 percent to 6 percent. Both candidates remained in the top four slots. Kolbe attributedthe shakeup in the polls to the performances of the candidates in the debate as well as the loss of support for social conservative contenders.

I think the rise of Ted Cruz can be attributed to very conservative voters slipping away from the minor candidates like [Mike] Huckabee and Santorum and. coalescing around the one they think has the best chance, Kolbe said.

The rise of Carly Fiorina can be traced rst, to her stellar performance in the debate with other second-tier candidates and second, to the fact that as a woman she is seen as the one candidate who could take on Hillary Clinton and not be accused of being sexist. Trouble is also brewing for former Texas Gov. Rick Perry. In a development rst reported by National Journal, the candidate in the crucial primary state of South Carolina was found to have stopped paying campaign staers, who are now working as volunteers.

Many observers have interpreted that development to mean the near end for Perry, who also didnt poll high enough to qualify for the GOP debate and is being mocked for mispronouncing Ronald Reagans name during an earlier forum with the lower-tier candidates. Gregory Angelo, executive director of Log Cabin Republicans, said the decision to withhold funds from South Carolina staers could mean the imminent demise of Perrys campaign.

Perry is one of those individuals who seems in danger of not lasting barring a breakout performance at the next debate, which is still ve weeks away, Angelo said. Thats a long time for a campaign operation in a state as crucial as South Carolina to go without pay. The big focus for both Republicans and Democrats this election cycle seems to be on Super PACs, but Perrys is a cautionary tale that Super PACs alone are not enough to keep a campaign going.

Direct contributions to campaigns are still necessary and vital. The ocer replied, How am I supposed to know, according to Jiretsu, while the other ocers laughed. He asked the rst set of ocers to leave since they could not help and called again to request dierent ocers. Some of the same ocers returned with a few new ones and the same situation occurred. Every time he would correct them they would continue to misgender him out of blatant disrespect, said Jiretsu.

Indoor tanning a concern for gay, bi men NEW YORK Gay and bisexual men are more likely than straight men to use indoor tanning and almost as likely as women to engage in the dermatologically risky behavior, according to new research reported by Reuters and other news outlets. Were not surprised that there is more indoor tanning among gay and bisexual men, compared to straight men, but what is striking is that the absolute prevalence rivals that of straight women, said lead author Dr.

Howa Yeung.

He and Dr. Suephy Chen, both dermatologists at Emory University in Atlanta, report in JAMA Dermatology that 5 percent of gay men and about 7 percent of bisexual men reported tanning in the last year, compared to less than 2 percent of straight men and about 7 percent of straight women, Reuters reports. Straight women have historically been considered the highest risk group for indoor tanning, Yeung told Reuters Health. We really havent focused on men at all, he added. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that as many ascases of skin cancer may be related to indoor tanning in the United States each year, including 6, melanomas, which are the deadliest type of skin cancer, the Reuters report notes.

PrEP outreach efforts failing among Latinos LOS ANGELES HIV prevention eorts involving use of the PrEP pre-exposure prophylaxis drug Truvada have not succeeded with gay Latinos, health workers told masala-magazin.com. Those barriers include a lack of knowledge about the drug, and the stigmas attached to sleeping with men and to perceived promiscuity. Many Latinos also have concerns about costs and side eects, masala-magazin.com reports. Even for people who have heard about it, [these concerns make] them reluctant to use, or hesitant to even inquire about, it, says Phillip Schnarrs, assistant professor of health promotion at the University of Texas at San Antonio and research director for the Austin PrEP Access Project.

Schnarrs, who is conducting a study with gay and bisexual Latino men in Texas, told masala-magazin.com that 58 percent of those surveyed see themselves as good candidates for PrEP, compared with 82 percent of non-Hispanic whites, according to preliminary data.

In an ongoing study of 20 Latino gay couples in New York City, 37 of the 40 people had never heard about PrEP when interviewed last year, says Omar Martinez, assistant professor of social work at the Temple University College of Public Health.

Latinos are disproportionately aected by HIV. They make up about 21 percent of new infections nationally, though they represent about 17 percent of the population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Latinos are also more likely than non-Hispanic whites and blacks to get diagnosed later in the course of their illness, raising the risks to their health and the likelihood of transmission to others, the masala-magazin.com article notes.

In Minnesota, these young people are far more likely than their straight peers to become pregnant or have gotten someone pregnant, according to a recent analysis of data on adolescent sexual health.

Its very counterintuitive, Judith Kahn, executive director of Teenwise Minnesota, the organization that discovered the trend, told the Star Tribune. People who work with this community suggest that many factors are driving the trend.

Struggles with mental health, homelessness, substance abuse and sexual violence were described by pregnant youths interviewed by researchers for Rainbow Health Initiative. Teenwise Minnesota, a statewide organization that promotes the sexual health of young people, uncovered the trend in teen pregnancies while correlating the data from the latest statewide survey of student health.

It was the rst time the survey, which was rst done inasked 9th- and 11th-grade students about their sexual orientation, the Star Tribune reports. Among the revelatory ndings: Bisexual females were ve times more likely to have been pregnant than straight females. And questioning and gay males were four times more likely than straight males to report getting someone pregnant. They also were more sexually active than their straight peers, with about 51 percent of lesbian females reporting that they have had sex compared with For males, the dierence was similar.

About 49 percent of gay males surveyed said theyve had sex, while 26 percent of straight males reported having had sex, the Star Tribune article said. CALL TO ASK ABOUT OUR LASER LIPO SPECIALS PROUD SPONSOR OF MOST ELIGIBLE LGBT SINGLES. GOP should be embarrassed Cringe-worthy debate showcases worst of American politics. He writes regularly for the Blade. Paul Krugman wrote in the New York Times about last weeks rst Republican debate, For while its true that Mr.

Trump is, fundamentally, an absurd gure, so are his rivals. If you pay attention to what any one of them is actually saying, as opposed to how he says it, you discover incoherence and extremism every bit as bad as anything Mr. Trump has to oer. And thats not an accident: Talking nonsense is what you have to do to get anywhere in todays. Republican Party. My fear is people around the world who may have listened to what was billed as a serious debate could actually believe one of the participants would become the leader of the free world and commanderin-chief of the U.

That has to be a frightening thought. During the George W. Bush era, Americans oversees were questioned about the crazy things he was doing and many replied, Dont blame me I didnt vote for him.

What is both sad and scary is that in comparison to those on the stage during either the early debate, or the debate among the top 10, George W. Bush actually looked pretty good. There were a few memorable lines. said, If we simply go by someones resume, Hillary will be elected. Then there was Carly Fiorina who said, I know more world leaders than anyone running except for Hillary.

that can not

I guess Fiorina met a few when she was in the process of destroying Hewlett-Packard or helping to destroy Lucent. Donald Trump at center stage blustered his way through the debate, which was anticipated.

Clearly he was. responsible for the huge audience the debate attracted, which by some estimates was 24 million people. That huge audience included many like me who watched simply to see a train wreck and we werent disappointed. This wasnt actually a debate, but a circus. As those 10 men stood there before the debate, each having about 10 minutes to say anything, they had to listen to some of the inane comments made by the panel of questioners when one panelist spoke the truth asking, Isnt this awkward?

It was denitely awkward but more than that it was embarrassing. One of the interesting parts of the so-called debate was the questions that were pointedly asked of one or two participants while others werent given time to comment. So you never had one issue on which you could compare the answers of all I am sure for some of the participants that was a blessing since it was clear many of them wouldnt have been able to answer coherently.

The audience was allowed to applaud for their favorites, which took up some of the two hours, a saving grace for the Republican Party, as there was less time for answers. We really need to find a better way to run our elections. These campaigns are much too long and there is much too much money in them.

Many of these candidates have sugar daddies funding their Super PAC, which will keep their campaigns going even after they have no statistical chance of winning. There are still 15 months until the election. We will be hearing some of these same people debating many more times. Democrats will start their debates in October and there will be six of them. So the country and the world will have many more times to judge these candidates. But clearly the Democrats were the winners of this debate.

We know now it was the most watched primary debate in history, which means millions of people were treated to this embarrassing spectacle of candidates clearly not ready for prime time. I kept waiting for Donald Trump to turn to one of them and say, Youre red. Guess the closest he came to that was his put down of Megyn Kelly, which he continued after the debate with a sexist and disgusting rant.
